Description
A Rare Thames Classic with Modern Electric Elegance
Glass Slipper is a beautifully preserved 25-foot Freebody Slipper Stern Launch, built in 1978 by the legendary craftsmen at Peter Freebody & Co. of Berkshire, England. Part of a boatbuilding lineage that spans centuries along the River Thames, Freebody launches are renowned for their timeless design, fine joinery, and museum-quality brightwork. Slipper launches are distinguished by their graceful, sloping stern—originally designed to minimize wash and deliver a smooth, elegant ride—making them icons of refined river cruising.
Powered by a whisper-quiet Nelco electric motor, Glass Slipper offers a serene, fume-free cruising experience with no vibration or engine noise—just effortless, tranquil movement across the water. In 2024, she received a new control system, followed by a fresh set of long-life batteries in 2025, blending classic craftsmanship with modern reliability.
Her construction features rich mahogany and English oak, complemented by traditional “strawberries and cream” decking—an alternating plank pattern signature to fine British launches. The cockpit is thoughtfully appointed with a full-width stern bench, charming “kiddie seats” to port and starboard, and a traditional Lloyd Loom helm chair, all upholstered in blue fabric with crisp white piping. A varnished picnic table, polished deck hardware, a handmade mahogany-rimmed steering wheel, and a chrome floor-mounted spotlight complete the period-correct aesthetic.
Imported to California in 2010, Glass Slipper underwent a meticulous, two-year preservation restoration by Steve Brown of FinCo Fabrication in Santa Ana. An extensive refit was completed in 2023, and she has remained in covered storage and out of the water since.
Rare in North America and highly sought after by collectors and classic boat enthusiasts, Glass Slipper represents a unique opportunity to own a true piece of British riverboat heritage—reimagined for modern, quiet, electric cruising.
