Mercury Racing K-planes help your powerboat run level when conditions are anything but
November 16, 2001
Ever get that "sideways" feeling in quartering seas? Without trim tabs to counteract the push of swells from one side or the other, there's not much you can do other than load up on motion-sickness medication, chase it with salt crackers and hang on. That's why most high-performance powerboats, especially those longer than 30 feet, have trim tabs.
Hydraulic K-planes are Mercury Racing's take on trim tabs, and they are the most popular offerings on the high-performance market. Cast from corrosion-resistant aluminum, they are offered for powerboats from 21 feet long to more than 40 feet long. (Mercury also builds K-planes for even larger offshore race boats.)
All exposed K-plane parts are coated with protective paint. Exposed fasteners are stainless steel. Each K-plane has backing ribs, which strengthen the plane and serve as attachment points for the hydraulic cylinders. Double-acting hydraulic cylinders maintain plane position and react immediately to driver input at the helm.
K-plane models include the 150S for boats from 21 to 30 feet long; the 280S, 300S and 380S for boats from 31 to 40 feet long; and the 450S for boats 40 feet and longer.
