MerCruiser created instant buzz when it introduced the Black Scorpion engine in late 1995. Rated at 315 horsepower, the small-block inboard delivered gobs of torque and pushed a 20-foot-long tournament ski boat more than 50 mph. That made it a dream choice for barefooters, who run at higher speeds, and anyone in a hurry.

The MX 6.2 Black Scorpion Ski Inboard, the latest version of the motor, builds on that legacy in a big way — it's rated at 340 horsepower. The 377-cubic-inch V-8 motor has a bore and stroke of 4.00/3.75 and a compression ratio of 9.0:1. Full-throttle operating range for the engine, which boasts a Tunnel Ram intake system, is 4,800 to 5,200 rpm.

Internal component highlights include a forged-steel crankshaft and a billet-steel camshaft. A built-in flush system, a remote oil filter for unobstructed access and constant-tension hose clamps make routine maintenance easier.

The engine weighs 885 pounds. It is offered with a direct (1:1) Velvet 71 drive.
