Swan 42: Corinthian One Design
Nautor's Swan 42: A Partnership with the New York Yacht Club
In the Spring of 2005, the New York Yacht Club approached several designers requesting a proposal for a new One Design yacht for the Club members and other sailors to enjoy traditional Corinthian racing. The boat was to be fast, fun to sail and rate well under the IRC Rule.
Nautor's Swan teamed up with the German Frers design team to present their proposal. After a thorough investigation of all of the submissions, the NYYC OD Committee selected the Nautor/Frers team to design and build the new One Design yacht. Thus the birth of a new Swan, a 42 foot racing yacht that is tailor-made for one-design racing, can perform well under IRC and can be comfortably cruised offshore.
Designed by the Frers design team in collaboration with Nautor's Swan, to specifications developed by the NYYC, this new model will be a high performance yacht with racing at its core. Not only will the yacht have the benefits of a strong class association, it will be competitive at international sailing regattas within open divisions including IRC, and will also provide owners with a comfortable cruising experience for which Swans are renowned. Nautor's Swan's commitment to utilise only the highest quality materials in the construction of its yachts will be matched with the technological advancement that prospective owners will expect from a one-design class model. The yacht's composite construction will ensure light displacement and high performance, while light and airy detailing within the interior will create the stylish appearance that one would expect from the latest generation Swan.
The class rules will be developed by the NYYC, which will also be initially responsible for administering the class and promoting and running class events. Nautor's Swan will market the yacht and promote the class to sailors and other leading yacht clubs around the world through its global network of agents and service yards.
Currently, the Club Swan 42 design has been finalized, the molds are under construction at the company's facilities in Pietarsaari, Finland, and production is scheduled to begin shortly. The first boat is expected to be launched during the summer of 2006.The one-design class rules will have strict limitations on sail inventory, sail replacement, and the number of professionals on board to keep the cost of racing down and resale value high. The class will be managed initially by the NYYC, with additional representation as fleets are established around the world. A preliminary schedule of events will be available in the spring of 2006. Class management and Nautor's Swan will be responsible for class development and establishing events worldwide.
