Description
Bumblepuppy is a classic Dark Harbor 17, a B.B.Crowninshield design, built by Rice Brothers in 1908 in East Boothbay, ME for George Wigglesworth (Manchester Yacht Club sail number M10, originally named VOSETTA), notes indicate it may be hull #6. It has previously been owned by the Rockefeller family and the 1917 Lloyd's Register of American Yachts lists Richard Sears, winner of the first 7 US National Tennis Championships, as owner. Sears moved the boat to Dark Harbor when he bought a house here in 1920, and raced for many years.
Bumblepuppy is approximately 50% restored and is being offered as a custom restoration project at PYY for completion. It comes with all original bz hardware (polished and in excellent condition), brand new Nat Wilson sails (main, jib, storm jib, spinnaker), brand new Sitka mast and boom, brand new standing rigging, brand new running rigging.
This is an outstanding opportunity to custom finish a lovely classic boat.
Description
The Dark Harbor 17 is a 1908 design by B.B.Crowninshield, first built in 1908 by both Rice Brothers in E. Boothbay, Maine and George Lawley & Son in Neponset, MA. The first 17 boats were built by Rice Brothers for the Manchester Yacht Club and Bumblepuppy was built to be raced in the MYC in 1908 for George Wigglesworth with a sail number of M-10 and named Vosetta. Research indicates this is possibly hull #6 of the originals. Famed tennis star Richard Sears bought the boat, changed the name to Bumblepuppy (card game Pitch with no rules), and brought it to Dark Harbor to join this fleet, when he bought a mansion here, in 1920.
Rich in history the Dark Harbor 17 is a great sailing boat especially in the protected waters of coastal Maine. They have classic lines, sail well, and look good on the mooring and under sail.
Bumblepuppy is for sale for continuation of a customized restoration which is presently 60% complete. It comes with all the original bz castings, recently inspected and polished, new Nat Wilson sails, new standing and running rigging, new Sitka spars.
