Description

1998 J COMPOSITE J/120,

1998 J/120 - high-end cruiser-racer, ready to sail
This 1998 J/120 is an excellent example of what J Boats does best: a true fast, light, safe, and comfortable cruiser-racer. This boat has undergone significant recent structural work, as well as a complete upgrade of the rigging, sails, and safety equipment, making it particularly reassuring for anyone looking for a high-performance sailboat without unpleasant surprises.
The boat is owned by a French company, which allows, in the case of purchase by a European company subject to VAT, to recover/deduct the VAT on the acquisition.

Construction and hull
The hull and deck are constructed from high-tech balsa/glass fiber sandwich, implemented using the vacuum process "Scrimp system," known for its rigidity, lightweight, and durability. The hull and deck were molded by TPI Composites (USA) and then completed by J Composites in France, ensuring quality finishing.
The deck features a bi-tone non-slip coating. The hull is finished in an elegant "Flag Blue" gelcoat with white stripes and waterline.
Recent significant work:
Complete scraping of the hull and full preparation of the underwater body.
Keel/hull connection fully redone by a professional.
Recent refitting of the interior for a clean and healthy environment.

The lead keel is attached to a powerful molded fin, and the boat is steered by a balanced rudder mounted on an anodized aluminum shaft. The steering wheel is equipped with a new Carbonautica wheel (2023), providing precision and comfort.
The propulsion is provided by a Volvo Penta MD2040B inboard diesel engine, driving a Gori folding propeller on a stainless steel shaft, coupled with a 110-liter diesel tank.

Rigging, fittings, and deck
The boat is equipped with an aluminum Sparcraft mast and boom, with a profiled mast and two levels of aerodynamic spreader bars. The following points have been particularly well taken care of:
All standing rigging replaced in 2023.
New Profurl furler (2023).
Retractable carbon fiber bowsprit, ideal for Code 0 and asymmetric spinnakers.
Lazy jacks and reefing lines for easy use with a reduced crew.
Jackstays in place.

The deck fittings are of racing quality:
2 primary Harken 48ST winches.
4 Harken 44ST winches for halyards and mainsail sheets.
Spinlock clutches for halyards and sheets.
Harken genoa tracks with adjustable cars from the cockpit.
Harken jib track.
Harken mainsail sheet track.

Safety on deck is ensured by front/rear rails, double lifelines, and a swim ladder on the transom.

Sails
The sail plan is one of the major assets of this boat, with a recent high-end wardrobe and a complete set of downwind sails:
Recent sails (2023):
Carbon mainsail (2023).
No. 2 carbon genoa (2023).
No. 3 carbon genoa (2023).
Code 0 (2023).

Additional sails:
Storm jib (2006).
Staysail / Trisail (2006).
A2 spinnaker (2006).
A3 spinnaker (2006).
A5 spinnaker (2006).

A set perfectly suited for IRC/ORC racing, offshore sailing, and fast cruising.

Electricity and electronics
The electronic equipment is complete and well-sized for both offshore racing and demanding cruising:
Navtex.
Garmin chartplotter with log/speedo, depth sounder, wind speed and direction.
7 Raymarine displays on deck (2023), providing all navigation information at a glance.

VHF with antenna.

Electrical equipment:

Combined masthead lights + deck spotlight.
Freshwater and seawater pumps.
Shore power connection and battery charger.

Interior
The interior is warm and nautical, finished in varnished cherry by J Composites, with recently redone linings. The layout offers comfort and functionality, both for racing with a crew and for family cruising.
Eberspacher heating for comfort in mid-season and winter.
Two new freshwater tanks of 90 L each.
Refrigerator with good capacity.
Gas stove with oven and two burners.
Galley with double sink and hot/cold pressurized water.
New toilets (2023).

Sleeping arrangements:

Saloon with benches + pipe berths on port and starboard.

Ideal for a cruising-racing program, coastal or offshore racing, Fastnet, RORC, or fast cruising.
