ISLAND PACKET 380 Designer and Builder Comments

The 380 introduces a new generation of Island Packet designs. Perhaps its most notable feature is a new bow shape that nicely compliments the recently introduced stern design. This is the first Island Packet to not use a bobstay, with the bowsprit now functioning solely as a platform for anchors. While the 380's forward hull shape is somewhat finer than previous designs, it actually increases room in the forward interior areas because it extends further forward relative to the waterline.

Other hull features include improved keel and rudder foil shapes that will combine to offer both performance and steering enhancements. As already mentioned, the stern design incorporates a transom with an integral swim platform and stern rail seats that have proven to be so popular on other Island Packet models. Hull construction now utilizes our exclusive PolyClad011, a further advance in our gelcoat process technology. This is a dual gel process with PolyClad II used below the boot stripe, while the topsides, deck and interior surfaces feature DuraShieldTM for its superior gloss, color retention and resistance to crazing.

On deck, the 380 has all the design features for which Island Packets have long been noted. These include a recessed foredeck with bulwarks, anchor platform (with new custom rollers), full length stainless steel cabin top handrails, molded deck detail for hardware and canvas work, Dorade vents/skylights (restyled and improved), coarse diamond pattern slip resistant surfaces, large coaming top storage bins (better than ever) and a great cockpit with two large storage lockers (under seat hatches that open on gas-struts), insulated beverage box, hand held shower, and all the other usual amenities. Pedestal mounted rack and pinion steering is, of course, standard.

The 380's sailplan is proportionately taller compared to previous designs to take advantage of the sail carrying ability of this design. This will translate into gains in both light air and windward performance. The staysail features the Hoyt boom system that has proven to be so successful on other recent Island Packet models. I expect the 380 to have particularly nice sailing qualities.

The interior of the 380 introduces a number of new features. Probably the most notable of these is the forward stateroom's centerline island berth. This is a big berth (6'6" long x almost 6' wide at its widest), which is easily accessed from either side. The aft end has a hinged lid supported by a gas strut that lifts up to access a huge storage tray that'll be perfect for blankets and the like. There's lots of additional storage in this stateroom as well, in drawers under the berth, a hanging locker, two bureaus and on long shelves at either side. The large forepeak should easily hold all the ground tackle one might want, with room left over for offshore stowage of fenders, dock lines and the like. The head compartment continues our tradition of access from either the forward stateroom or salon. This is a particularly spacious head with a novel folding stall shower enclosure that stows against the aft bulkhead when not is use. This leaves a full length mirror when stowed, and, when open, divides the shower from the vanity area with full height, textured, clear acrylic doors. "Captain's chair" seating is provided for the shower and, with the teak seat folded up, equally comfortable seating is provided for the toilet. I think this head arrangement will be more "user-friendly" than most of us are used to at home! The vanity features a beautiful deep, large oval sink in polished stainless steel. The vanity cabinet itself now has Formica surfaces with teak accents for a brighter and more practical finish. Lots of storage is available in the vanity and in under deck cabinets, and plenty of light and ventilation will be provided from a large overhead hatch and the opening port.

Probably the next most notable interior feature is the aft stateroom with its big double berth, hanging locker and large bureau with a hideaway "pull-out" sink. The sink is mounted in a drawer-like unit, with a folding countertop cover. A clever Swedish made folding faucet with tap controls allows this to be a very neat and compact installation, but with all the convenience of a fixed sink. The aft stateroom also has a full length mirror, two opening ports (one in the footwell for excellent cross ventilation) and an overhead hatch.

The galley will be noted for its spacious arrangement and generous counter and storage room. The icebox has a new lid design that's one-piece and hinged (also with a gas support strut) and features improved gasketing and latching. The icebox itself has increased insulation and has been designed to accept an Adler-Barbour system that they are engineering and prebuilding to fit this yacht. A new three-burner Hillerange is also being introduced on this yacht, with a very attractive black finish and a sealed burner/top surface design that will be much easier to maintain. A 115v microwave oven is standard and along with several large drawers, a deluxe dishrack, pull-out trash bin, large dry storage lockers, and several other cabinets, this should be one of the best galleys afloat. As usual, all galley, adjacent companionway and nav area sole surfaces are a molded, slip-resistant surface for improved safety and ease of maintenance.

The main salon continues our tried, proven and very popular arrangement of facing settees port and starboard, with the port side able to convert into a double with a pull-out extension. The nav area shares its seat with the aft end of the port settee, with a fixed table that will hold chart packs or most half-folded standard charts. The master electrical panel is mounted in a separate cabinet over the table, with extra room for owner equipment and a storage drawer for small items also provided. Companionway drop boards conveniently store out of the way in a rack under the nav table. Our trademark Island Packet dining table folds to allow for a large serving/dining table or a completely open salon when stored against the bulkhead rack.

Tanks (fuel, water, holding) are all centrally located below the sole to keep trim changes to a minimum, to keep the weight of full tanks down low, and to provide the maximum of storage elsewhere in the yacht. Excellent capacity has been provided in all three tanks, and exceptional storage is available in every cabin.

I think the new 380 is likely to become one of Island Packet's most important new models. It's ushering in the next generation of, what I feel, are the best cruising sailboats available. Whether it's our Full Foil Keel, hull shape, cutter rig design, construction techniques or the selection of a hardware item, we are continuously refining and upgrading our yachts to provide owners the best cruising boat available. I am more excited than ever about our entire line of models, and the new 380 represents the very best of everything that has made Island Packet Yachts a success in our first twenty years.
