Description
Long range cruising yachts of such pedigree and outfitted to this extent rarely come to the market. 'SULA' was bought by her present owner in California and he immediately set about preparing the yacht for his trans Pacific adventures. Marcus is an experienced yachtsman and he wanted to have a yacht that was not only very self sufficient, but also perfectly set up. The standing rigging had been recently replaced in 2021. All furling mechanisms are hydraulic and all hydraulic hoses were replaced throughout the boat.  New teak decks were installed, glued not screwed, and thicker Burmese selected teak was used. A very strong davit set up by SIMPSON Davits was installed, complete with an electric winch. Next came an extra fuel tank.. Marcus replaced one water tank with a new aluminium fuel tank then built another smaller water tank dedicated to the watermaker output. An excellent fuel polishing system completed the fuel enhancements.
The powerful six cylinder engine received a major servicing and an extra alternator was fitted. A new shaft, new 4 blade MAXPROP c/w rope cutter. The rudder, which is semi balanced on a partial skeg, had new bearings installed. Next to electrics... Marcus chose lithium batteries and these were expertly installed with professional standard housing.   For the best communications, two separate STARLINK satellite units were added to the inventory.Â
All these works were carried out in 2022 / 2023 and the yacht stands today as a very attractive proposition.
The Hallberg-Rassy 53 was built for fifteen years between 1992 and 2006, 88 yachts being exported worldwide. Some of the stand out features of these yachts are the external lead ballast, incorporating the popular bulb keel, the Whitlock Cobra rod steering system, the hard top that gives cover to the forward half of the cockpit, a beautiful mahogany interior with abundant stowage plus good headroom.

Comments by her designer
"The Hallberg-Rassy 53 is designed with the cruising connoisseur very much in mind. She follows closely the tradition and philosophy behind my earlier Hallberg-Rassy designs. The hull shape was developed following the significant lessons learned from the intense research program carried out by our design office for the America's Cup.
Racing they say improves the breed. This is certainly the case with the 53 which, though not designed with competition in mind, benefits, particularly when sailing upwind from testing we carried out on keel and rudder shapes.
Her moderate displacement is in line with the yacht's strong construction and high level of equipment carried on board. Sail area too is generous, and coupled with the excellent stability gained from the 53´s special bulb keel, performs well, even in light winds.
The overhangs are rather generous for her type and contribute to give the yacht an aspect of graceful elegance which will be maintained regardless of the passage of time."

We quote the magazine Yacht Premiere:
"Designed by Germán Frers, it combines modern styling and a performance hull but still retains that timeless elegance that is the hallmark of the range, while down below it provides the space and comfort of a luxury floating home. The interior is finished in glowing rich red mahogany, again a Hallberg-Rassy trademark, one of which they are justly proud. Satin finished, smooth, rounded, warm to the touch and soothing to the eye, the interiors of these boats are superb. The layout is designed to allow unimpeded access from bow to stern, in a smooth line with no obstructions. The saloon table has superbly radiussed fiddles that fades away in the corners. The engine room is a full-height, walk-in compartment, with ample room to work around the six-cylinder engine. Also in here is the generator, with room for a water-maker if required, and easy access to all systems. Perforated aluminium linings cover the sound insulation, adding to the high quality feel of the installation."
Yachting World, February 1994 sum up like this: "Overall the Hallberg-Rassy 53 is a genuine go-anywhere boat which could be lived on for extended periods of time permanently. With these purposes in mind, she is a difficult boat to beat."Â
Accommodation
The yacht offers three cabins in total, the owners aft cabin for three, a double plus a single, with a quality en-suite bathroom, next a twin bunk cabin forward to starboard and the double full forward. The two cabins up front share a bathroom opposite the twin cabin to port. There are overhead hatches and opening ports in the cabins and galley for good ventilation. Stowage on this yacht is vast and even extends to deep stowage under the cabin soles. The whole interior is fully air-conditioned. For entertainment there is a large bulkhead mounted flat-screen and a FUSION sound system c/w sub woofer.
The fit and finish remains excellent and the upholstery is still original !
