Description

The Seaward 32RK, designed by Nick Hake, is a versatile and trailable performance cruiser that excels in shallow waters thanks to its retractable keel and rudder. The "RK" in its name stands for "retracting keel". While there was a Seaward Eagle 32 produced in the early 2000s, the 32RK is the model that became most recognized and is often the subject of inquiries.

Key features

  • Retracting keel: The electric winch-operated keel, tipped with a lead bulb, can be lowered for stability and performance or fully retracted to a shallow draft of around 20 inches, making it easy to trailer, navigate shallow areas, or even beach the boat.
  • Retractable rudder: The transom-mounted rudder also lifts, providing full shoal-water capability.
  • Performance: With its keel down, the 32RK is a capable and stable cruiser, engineered for agility and upwind performance. It has a displacement of 8,300 pounds and carries 2,400 pounds of ballast.
  • Engine: The boat is commonly powered by a 30 hp Yanmar diesel engine.
  • Deck and cockpit: The deck features a masthead sloop rig with a bowsprit. The cockpit is large and comfortable, with a walk-through transom, swimming ladder, and a freshwater shower.

Interior accommodationsThe Seaward 32RK was designed to maximize interior space and comfort for a small family or two couples. The living area is bright and well-ventilated, with eight opening ports and two deck hatches.

  • Sleeping capacity: Sleeps up to six people with three double berths.
  • Layout:
    • Forward cabin: An enclosed V-berth offers a double berth with ample storage.
    • Saloon: A U-shaped dinette to port can be converted into another double berth. To starboard is a settee that can function as seating or an extra child's berth.
    • Aft cabin: A double quarter-berth is located on the port side, tucked under the cockpit.
  • Galley: An L-shaped galley on the starboard side includes a two-burner stove, a double sink, and a refrigerator.
  • Head: The enclosed head compartment is to port, and features a manual toilet, sink, and separate shower stall.
  • Navigation station: A dedicated nav station is opposite the galley.

Performance and handlingThe 32RK is designed for easy handling, including for a single sailor. For those who want the flexibility of exploring shallow coves or trailering their boat to new cruising grounds, the ability to raise and lower the keel and rudder is the primary appeal.
