Description
Unique catamaran, designed by Gilles VATON and built by Catana Group under Bureau Veritas requirements, the flagship TAINO 85 is a great combination of performance and comfort.Â
Built in 2010 by a Catana Group boutique yard Port Pin Rolland in Toulon, France, due to first owner circumstances she only started sailing since 2019 (after factory refit) and sailed very little in 2019-24. She is now in full use since 2024 as I live fulltime aboard in the Med. Never chartered, transparent private owner history and yes, she is a private EU VAT paid boat.
So how is she different to the currently produced mass market sailing catamarans?
- She is a classic-form bluewater Catana with low-freeboard long slim (10:1) hulls, daggerboards, dual helms and no flybridge. With her powerful sail plan (214m2 main, 110m2 genoa and 260m2 gennaker) she sails well in light winds. And deeply reefed (2-3rd reef plus small staysail) – she can handle some serious wind and high waves in relative comfort.Â
- (If needed) she can beat into the wind at 25deg AWA with modest leeway.
- (Or better) she can run the waves at 140deg AWA like on rails, eating miles with all plates and glasses standing firm on the table.
- She has all heavy parts (fuel and water tanks, engine rooms) amidships - so her wave motion (both at sea and on anchor) is very smooth – you will not find it in the mass market.
- (If there is no wind) she is very fuel-efficient, motoring on one engine at 1200rpm at 5kn consuming 1LpNm.
- Powerful engines plus large propellers amidships = great maneuverability in windy conditions
- She has interior and deck space for comfortable large family cruising or full time living aboard, but is simple and can be managed by two capable sailors, or small crew aboard. Catana used quality materials and skilled labor while producing their flagship.
- Technically, she is no different to a standard cruising catamaran in 50ft range, but built on better quality components and all systems are duplicated for emergency. Most systems are located in spacious engine rooms which is convenient for service. One crew cabin serves as storage of spare parts or workshop.
- With her wide beam she can carry up to 6m tender which make a total difference on anchorage. This is a great tool to supply the boat and explore the surrounds in 2-3-5 miles away which is not possible in a standard 3m dinghy found on most catamarans.
