Description

OUI FLING is a bespoke Spirit 52D conceived as an elegant modern classic optimised purely racing. She has a classic flush‐deck profile but with traditional overhangs, OUI FLING features a weight‐minimised structure including a carbon keel blade, rudder, winches, and fittings—while retaining the craftsmanship of Spirit Yachts. The yacht’s hull is wooden epoxy construction—built using sapele ring frames, yellow cedar planking, and fine fiberglass fairing—with structural carbon reinforcements at load points for stiffness. She displaces just under 7 tonnes, nearly two tonnes lighter than standard Spirit 52 models, and carries approximately 3.25t of lead ballast, delivering outstanding stability and sail-carrying ability—even in light wind conditions. Deck ergonomics have been optimised for racing: a clean flush deck devoid of stanchions, a large bespoke cockpit customised for crew, and separate helm and tactician stations. Electric winches ensure efficient sail handling, while all running rigging is routed aft for enhanced control and speed management. Although she lacks a full interior—merely minimal headroom seating and essential facilities—the vessel’s simplicity allows for maximum lightness and agility. Launched just seven months after initial design discussions, OUI FLING swiftly won her IRC class at British Classic Week in Cowes 2021.

Construction

Hull Construction:

  • Yellow (Alaskan) cedar over male mould, 18mm x 40mm cover (speed strip), epoxy bonded .
  • Planking cross laminated with 2x3mm khaya veneers at 45 degrees.
  • The hog, keel, stem and stern posts, horn timber and beam shelf constructed from solid or laminated straight grain yellow cedar.
  • The hull is stiffened by cave bins and stringers etc. in high stress areas around the mast and keel trunk.
  • Laminated ring frames form the chain plate mounts and mast partners and transmit the loads to hull and laminated keel bearing floors.
  • All ring frames laminated from Sapele.
  • Extra hull stiffening is fitted as required.
  • All plywood used is manufactured to Lloyds specification.
  • The hull planking is sheathed with 2x450gsm bi-axial E-glass/Epoxy - 90° 1x200gsm twill E-glass/Epoxy (Above DWL) - 0°, faired with two layers of epoxy fillers and spray coated with Awlgrip paint system.
  • Colour Jade Mist green with gold cove line and white antifouling.

  • Deck caulking grey coloured.
  • There is no seating in the cockpit. Deck level continues to the cockpit wells with the coaming outboard.
  • Cockpit wells self-draining with the helm cockpit and working cockpit not interlinked.
  • Splash rails forward on foredeck.
  • Both the splash rails and the cockpit coamings will be a maximum of 60mm high reducing to 50mm where the mainsheet trimmer sits out. Just enough to keep water running down the deck away.
