Perry Design Review: X-Yachts X-119
Jeppesen performer for two-couple cruising
August 25, 2000
Designed by Niels Jeppesen, the X-119 is intended to be a fast boat specifically aimed at a one-design class. With narrow beam, bulb keel, light displacement, big rig and low wetted surface, the first X-Yachts X-119 has earned a reputation as a light-air flyer and a stiff upwind machine.
The sheer is a straight line. The ends are short and effective with lots of beam carried aft for sailing length. The keel has curved leading and trailing edges and a bulb with a protruding nose. The boat is stiff and sails comfortably to a PHRF rating of 48. The D/L ratio is 135.
The interior is laid out for racing or cruising with plenty of berths aft where the weight can do some good. The galley is small and the chart table is big. Headroom on centerline is 6 feet, 3 inches. The quarter berth areas are partitioned off for privacy, making this a good two-couple cruising yacht.
The SA/D ratio of the stock X-119 is 25.45. Note the running backstays and checkstays. The mast is stepped on the keel and there are two sets of spreaders.
